Google’s top AI researcher Ian Goodfellow has joined Apple as director for machine learning

According to the media reports Google’s top AI researcher Ian Goodfellow has joined Apple as director for machine learning. Ian Goodfellow was working with Google as one of the top artificial intelligence researcher prior to joining Apple. Before joining Google AI research team, Ian Goodfellow was working with Elon Musk-founded lab OpenAI.

Ian Goodfellow has updated his LinkedIn profile where he mentioned that he is now working with Apple as a director for machine learning at the company’s Special Projects group.

CNBC first reported that Ian Goodfellow has joined Apple as a director for machine learning.

Apple has been looking continuously for strengthening its AI and machine learning team to boost innovation in its products. Many companies around the world are hiring or buying start-ups and technical brains to boost their AI capabilities. In the same way Apple is enhancing its AI capabilities by hiring top minds.

Last year also Apple hired John Giannandrea, head of AI and search at Google, to supervise company’s AI strategy.

During last few years we have seen many hiring and acquisitions in the AI fields. These days Artificial Intelligence is one of the key technologies to achieve success in business. Companies and research institutes are doing a lot of researches AI to come up with innovative solutions for a particular problem.

Google is known worldwide for its strength in AI technologies. Its TensorFlow library is one of the best AI tools/library for developing large scale machine learning projects.

Apple is using latest AI technologies being developed these days in their products. Apple is coming up with products with the features ranging from facial recognition to photography.

Besides many products at Apple, company is developing an autonomous system for cars. This project certainly need top engineers to work together to develop this system.

Ian Goodfellow is well known for their research in AI approach for generative adversarial networks or GANs. He is considered as father of generative adversarial networks or GANs.

A generative adversarial network (GAN) is form of unsupervised machine learning systems. Her two neural networks contest with each other in a zero-sum game framework. This type of neural networks is used to generate fake media accounts, generate better image and many others.

Apple team has also done work in GAN technology and now Apple hire father of generative adversarial networks or GANs, which will further enhance company’s capability.

Goodfellow got his Ph.D. at the University of Montreal in 2014. After completing Ph.D. in 2014,  he started his career with Open AI. Later on he joined Google as an artificial intelligence researcher.

According to the tax filing records he was earning $800,000 at Open AI.
